Description . Bark Painting probably by Mawalan Marika (1908-1967) of North-East Arnhem Land – Subject = File Snakes, 1960s, natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark. Mawalan Marika, head of the Rirratjingu clan from North East Arhnem land, is considered one of the true greats of the bark tradition. Due to his historical and artistic prominence Mawalan is one of the most revered and widely represented artists in galleries and museums in Australia and overseas. His work still forms the centrepiece of the Art Gallery of NSW Indigenous collection. His work has been shown in many exhibitions, including: The Art of Arnhem Land, Perth, in 1957; Dreamings, New York, in 1988; Aratjara, which toured Europe in 1993–94.
