Item No. . DV02
Description . A late 19th early 20th c. incised Dayak trophy skull from Borneo. The Dayak tribes and particularly the Iban were feared headhunters. Various reasons for headhunting included soil fertility with a fresh head, to add supernatural strength to a warrior, revenge for murders, to pay dowry for marriages (shows warrior husbands prowess), as a symbol of power and social status ranking where the more heads someone has, the more respect he accrues plus various other reasons. Headhunting was largely eradicated by the early 20th century but was officially allowed against the Japanese during WW2. Photo shows a Dayak warrior with trophy skulls early 1900’s.
