Description . An Overmodelled Skull from the East Sepik Province with real braided Human Hair, shellwork and overmodeled with a paste consisting of red clay, lime and tigasso oil. The over modelling of the skulls of men, women and children was once a common practice for both the Iatmul and the Sawos people. This example is unusual with the use of a timber or bamboo projection for the eyes (usually timber was only used for nose pieces) and it is possibly a trophy skull. Most decorated skulls were of identifiable ancestors but similar decoration was also used for trophy skulls taken during headhunting raids. Photo courtesy South Australian Museum.
