Description . A Sepik River Hook painted in natural ochres and collected in the early 1960’s. Superb Carved Bat whose wings form Hook complete with Flying Fox (Bat) skin covering. Elaborate Hooks are generally described by anthropologists as cult hooks, food hooks or suspension hooks and are carved or decorated to accommodate benevolent spirits and to preserve food. Suspending food from the hooks discourages vermin and the spirit thought to inhabit the hook is believed to retard spoilage.
