DV18 Canoe Prow Humboldt Bay Walemo Village
$850.00
Item # .DV18
Description .Canoe Prow for the fishing canoes from Walamo Village, Humboldt Bay. These elaborately carved prows normally depicted a Friar bird which the local people believed to be a messenger from their ancestors, as well as guardians watching over the fishermen while at sea. The Friar Bird is a noisy bird that gives warning of danger and would watch over the canoe. As well as the bird the carving traditionally incorporates game fish and occasionally sharks. This very nice well used piece was collected at the start of the 1960’s but has had part of the beak end broken although this does not detract overall from the rest of the great carving. The piece also has a removable piece of timber which supports an upright stance.
