DT04 Skull Sawos Overmodelled East Sepik River Provinces

$3,250.00

Item No.                 . DT04

Description          . An Overmodelled Ancestor Skull from the Mid/East Sepik Provinces, probably Sawos, with Cassowary Feather Hair, shellwork and overmodeled with a paste consisting of red clay, lime and tigasso oil. The over modelling of the skulls of men, women and children was once a common practice for both the Iatmul, Abelam and Sawos people. These decorated skulls were often of identifiable ancestors rather than those taken in headhunting raids as trophies, although both could receive similar treatment. Similar examples are on display at various museums including the South Australia Museum and the British Museum. See photo (courtesy British Museum) Collected in 1961 by a patrol officer.
