Description . A Trobriand Sword/Club made from Ebony collected in 1960’s. Ebony as a wood for carving had largely dissapeared by the start of the 1970’s. The sword-clubs were widespread and men carried them as an everyday item and were used generally for dances and also used as weapons for skirmish’s and brawl’s in village disputes. In pitched battles with outsiders generally spears and shields were used. See ‘Malinowski, B’ (1920) ‘War & Weapons Among the Natives of the Trobriand Islands. Ebony as a wood for carving had largely disappeared from the islands by the 1970’s.
