Description      .Nice painted Message stick from Central Australia collected in the late 1950’s. Traditional message sticks were made and crafted from wood and were stone carved or painted with symbols and decorative designs which conveyed messages and information. In addition, the symbols were meant to prove to its recipient that the messages being carried were genuine. There were always marks that were distinctive to the particular tribe or nation sending the message and often marks identifying the relationship of the carrier to their group. This way it could be identified and authenticated by neighbouring tribes when the message stick was taken long distances and passed by hand from one tribe to another. The message stick is normally stone-carved and decorated with geometric designs. Message sticks were used for tribal business and ceremony, and gave the bearer safe passage across tribal borders. Traditionally, message sticks were burned after they were used.
