Item #                 CQ10

Description      A Great example of a Trobriand Island Club collected in the 1950’s. Unusual carving with pierced holes (to which shells or decorative leaves could be attached for dance ceremonies) and a stylised snake at the top of the handle. The sword-clubs were widespread and men carried them as an everyday item and were generally used as weapons for skirmish’s and brawl’s in village disputes. In pitched battles with outsiders generally spears and shields were used. See ‘Malinowski, B’ (1920) ‘War & Weapons Among the Natives of the Trobriand Islands’
